Protect your purse and wallet at all times. Don't carry your Social Security number or card; leave it in a secure place. Carry only the identification information and the credit and debit cards that you'll actually need when you go out. If any of your ID has been lost or stolen, take action immediately. Contact the fraud department of each of the three credit bureaus. Tell them to flag your credit file with a “fraud alert,” including a statement that creditors should get permission before opening any accounts in your name. Initial fraud alerts are valid for three months but can be extended for up to seven years.
